Most legal disputes will never see the inside of a courtroom. Mediation is an opportunity for both parties to be heard and share valuable information in an informal and safe setting. Julia wants both parties to leave mediation feeling positive about the process and the outcome.
Background
Julia is a lawyer by training who handled workers’ compensation claims for injured workers and employers for over 20 years where she participated in hundreds of mediations before becoming an NCDRC Certified Superior Court Mediator. She has gained a reputation for maintaining the highest levels of professionalism while working on both sides of the bar. She is an excellent communicator who understands the importance of confidentiality and diplomacy,
Goals
Julia's goal for every mediation is to build trust with each party while asking pointed questions to not only understand the dispute but highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each party's case as she encourages the opponents to find common ground. She respectfully calls upon each party to reach a compromise. While the goal is to help the parties settle each case, Julia always strives to secure and share information that will put the case on better footing in the future if the case cannot be settled during mediation.
Diversity
Julia understands that parties to a dispute may have conflicting goals and attitudes about mediation. She is mindful that most injured workers have never experienced mediation and are stressed, in part, because the financial strain of an injury can affect all aspects of life. She also understands the law and knows that employers weigh multiple factors when deciding how to manage a case. Since she led a claims department for a boutique carrier, she also understands how to assess risk, the business decisions that carriers must make in each claim, and the process adjusters go through to secure authority to settle a case. Julia can connect with an injured worker as easily as a claims representative or CEO.
Injured workers
Julia initially represented injured workers where she concentrated on occupational disease claims and managed aspects of asbestos mass tort civil litigation.
Employers
She then joined a large insurance defense firm where she represented employers and carriers before she was recruited by a mid-size firm with diverse litigation practices where she worked for almost a decade and became an equity partner.
Carriers
Julia left private practice to join a boutique workers’ compensation insurance carrier where she led a team of professionals who adjusted claims for more than 5,000 injured workers over the course of almost five years.
Her background and experience make Julia uniquely qualified to mediate civil superior court cases and workers' compensation claims.
